Our Journey

History of Rotary Club
of Victoria Garden City

In January 1997, Rotarian Kola Ramos (of blessed memory), the Charter President of the Rotary Club of Victoria Island East and Assistant Governor in charge of Zone 1 of District 9110, led a couple of Rotarians from his club to visit a few friends and associates working and/or living in Victoria Garden City. He aimed to encourage them to start a Rotary Club in Victoria Garden City. Only four persons responded to the call. Three of them had been Rotarians, namely: Segun Marcus (District 9110), Billy Aigbe (District 9130) in Nigeria, and Alfred Heiman (District 5040) in Canada, while the fourth person was Ambassador Lawrence Olu-Ibukun. Alfred Heiman was made the interim President. The club grew quickly, and by the 1997–1998 Directory, it had grown to 24 members.

A full-fledged Rotary Club of Victoria Garden City was thereafter established, and the Certificate of Charter was presented to the Club on the 5th of June 1997 by District Governor PDG Lekan Ogundimu, 1996-1997. The main Club project for the Rotary year was membership recruitment, retention, development and expansion. As most members were new to Rotary, it was also the plan to make members Rotary-literate and expose them to Rotary fellowship, ways and practices.

Beyond membership development, the young club also set its sights on service to the community. It championed literacy awareness for schools and communities around it, and addressed poverty issues through the organization of Rotary Village Corps, which taught vocational skills to vocational workers and awarded certificates of excellence to deserving graduates. The club also established service awareness clubs such as the Inner Wheel Club of Victoria Garden City and the Interact Club of Victoria Garden City, as well as a Directorate for the Younger Generation, in order to broaden Rotary's reach and nurture future leaders. It further enhanced the health of citizens through participation in the Polio Plus Immunization exercise and public health enlightenment programmes, and promoted global understanding and leisure by organizing talks on topics of international interest, boat cruises, and visits to Rotarians in other Districts.

It is on this foundation that subsequent Presidents have built, and today the following clubs stand as a testament to the service awareness sown in our community: the Interact Club of Ilasan Secondary School, Lekki; the Interact Club of Victoria Island Grammar School, Victoria Island; the Interact Club of Indian Language School; the Rotaract Club of Victoria Garden City, Ajah; and the Rotaract Club of Lagos State University (LASU), Epe Campus, Epe — alongside the active clubs at Olomu Secondary School, Ajah, and Desenly Senior Secondary High School, Badore, Ajah.

Rotary International:
A World United in Service.

Founded in Chicago in 1905 by Paul Harris, Rotary was the world's first service club — born from a simple idea that professionals from different backgrounds could exchange ideas, form lifelong friendships, and give back to their communities.

Today, Rotary International connects members in clubs across more than 200 countries and geographical areas, tackling the world's most pressing challenges through grassroots action and global partnerships.

Regional Impact

Rotary in Africa
and Nigeria.

Rotary has a profound legacy on the African continent. In Nigeria, Rotarians have been at the forefront of the fight against polio — working alongside the World Health Organisation, UNICEF, and the Nigerian government to achieve one of the most significant public health milestones in Africa's history.

The elimination of wild polio in Nigeria, certified in August 2020, stands as a testament to decades of advocacy, funding, and grassroots mobilisation by Nigerian Rotarians who refused to give up.

End Polio Now

Our commitment to global health remains unwavering as we work to eradicate polio from the final corners of the globe. Rotary has helped vaccinate over 2.5 billion children worldwide — and we are not done yet.
